Character Information
Name: Shaun Hastings
Canon: Assassin's Creed
Age: Likely anywhere from 23 to 29
Gender: Male
Canon Point: After the journey on the Altair II between AC3 and AC4
Background Link: AC wiki.
Inventory: Shaun's stuck with nothing but the clothes on his back and his glasses, which happen to consist of little more than pants, a collar shirt, an analogue wristwatch and a really nerdy sweater. And maybe some pocket lint.
Personality: As stated by Shaun himself, he wasn't born into the Assassin Order like most people seem to be in the modern era: while most remaining Assassins are born and raised in pockets and communities where they learn to lay low, Shaun was born in England, and very very loud with reckless abandon, and was thrown into the world of conspiracy where he learned to meld and adapt. Even today, he acts like that teenager that thinks he's better and smarter than everyone else and is very well aware of it. To his credit, he's not entirely wrong; he's very smart and intelligent, definitely has an above average IQ and is able to remember and retain a vast amount of detail, while also at the big picture and able to see overarching connections and patterns. But he's very confident in his abilities (again, very aware of his skills), which can lead him to being very condescending with people that he first meets. Or people that he works with. Or people that he's good friends with, though usually not with his higher ups. In reality he doesn't actually think lesser of people, but he will make fun of them and grows very impatient very quickly. Mostly he simply enjoys being contrary, jabbing and ribbing people to get a rise out of them, but not so invested in it that he'll carry on entire arguments unless he actually cares about the subject.
Before he became an Assassin, he went to school, where he studied history and eventually became a historian on track to be a professor, having a great love for the subject-- though usually sarcastic and flippant when interacting socially, Shaun becomes very excited and intense when discussing and explaining history, adopting a much more genuine tone of voice and having no reservations about expressing his clear and obvious passion. To the point where one of his biggest motivations for joining the Assassins and wanting to take down Abstergo is so he can get into their databases, and get access to all their lost and hidden information, and to the point where his demeanor became almost manic when he was rambling through his explanation to find a password into an ancient temple. But despite taking the analytical "desk job" in the games, he's very proactive-- before joining the Brotherhood he started leaking information, publishing things on websites like WikiLeaks, with no regard for his own personal safety, and calls Desmond to action to check certain things out for him in the Animus' data once he notices a problem (this time for no regard on whether he's being a burden). He's both arrogant and overconfident-- again, being very aware that he is right, and not realizing someone might not like this information out there-- but also believes in transparency. Something about Abstergo hiding secrets bothered him, and he felt the need to uncover them; despite how flighty and snide he can be, he has very pure regard for the value and power of information, and is willing to pursue something simply to learn. Though not very initially trusting of people-- he was wise enough to leak info under an alias, and was slightly hostile with Desmond at first, he does not seem to think people are immediately out to hide secrets and betray unless they clearly work for the enemy (so, if you have a large white beard or are French.)
Shaun does believe in the ideals of the Assassins-- freedom, transparency, agency and so on. But his world view is not black and white, and never has been. Though he works for the Assassins willingly, it is also because otherwise Abstergo would likely kill him, and though he believes in the cause he is also aware that both the Templars and the Assassins are both killers; two sides of the same coin, manipulating people through history for dominance. Again, despite having the desk job and preferring to be the scholar, Shaun has killed people before, and assumably has some Assassin training-- however, he is lax to talk about it, and it comes off as though he didn't enjoy it. He's not necessarily cynical, so much as resigned, practical and realistic; he doesn't want to kill again, hopes he won't, but also knows it is likely, and doesn't resent his teammates for having to. He doesn't believe anyone is truly innocent, and his casual acceptance of murder is likely also out of practically, but he does believe that people are good. Though he doesn't act like it, he genuinely enjoyed the time he spent with Lucy, Rebecca and Desmond, even though he stated Desmond was "a bit annoying at first," but he's later seen fondly reflecting on it. For how much he acts like he doesn't care, he cares very much, as he still works his butt off for the Assassins and works to keep all the other dwindling teams out there in contact, off-handedly expressing worry when things go bad. And, even though they're playing games of secrets and deceit, he genuinely had no idea Lucy would betray them, made all of her funeral preparations, and never seemed to resent her despite the fact that she'd sold them out and put all their lives in danger.
He occasionally comes off as a bit of a lonely person, never mentioning any friends or family from before he joined the Brotherhood (and he's only been on the team for a few years compared to Rebecca's lifetime), and when he brought up a girl that he had dated before (or maybe just had a crush on), Rebecca says that he had barely gotten anywhere with her and she thought he was weird. On another occasion he states that having a wealth of historical knowledge can impress girls, but also admits that they were overwhelmed, so he's kind of socially awkward, likely too focused on the whole pursuit of knowledge thing. Which isn't to say he's inept-- again, he has the confidence to carry himself and conversing with the other members of the team actually comes very easy to him even when he'd just met Desmond five minutes ago. However, he prefers to make light of situations; his dialogue, aside from his exposition, are filled to the brim with sass and sarcasm, and he doesn't hesitate to drop jokes in the database articles he writes when they're theoretically supposed to be serious. He makes serious discussions into a bit of a farce, and will be overdramatic about mundane situations, so it's likely that his inability to grow close to people is a disinclination towards serious engagement or intimacy, mostly likely as a way to cope with their pretty damn serious We're On The Run From The Most Powerful Organization In The World situation.
Flavor Abilities: Really really good at uselessly in depth historical facts and using chatspeak to make fun of ancient god-like aliens.
Suitability: Shaun has effectively spent the last 3-4 years of his life already on the run. He was inducted into the Assassin Brotherhood after being kidnapped by Abstergo, and throughout the events of AC2, Brotherhood, Revelations and AC3, the team was forced to lay low and hide from the more strongly present Templars, through which they had to survive on their own and live off the grid. So he's very good at dealing with being yanked out of your life and thrown into a life or death situation. Though the fact that he's the one to ever suggest going into town or bothering the others for interaction over e-mail also suggests that the even more deserted isolation in the game would drive him even more to irritation. The setting will force him to move around and do his own footwork at least every now and then, which will annoy him immensely. Most importantly, he was an analyst and historian, mostly working to provide expository information as well as coordinate and kept in contact with Assassin cells across the globe, and fancies himself a fan of conspiracies and secrets: he'll immediately strive to dig up information on the history of Norfinbury, and would be willing to log it and share it with anyone else over the network.
